It\u2019s a short version of the Latin, Semper Fidelis. It means always faithful. Or perhaps more literally, \u201cAlways marked by fidelity.\u201d The earliest recorded use of the phrase dates back to a town of Abbeville in France almost 700 years ago. The US Marines adopted it in 1883.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a great moto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Always faithful\u2026. To what? I guess it might mean always faithful to the flag. Or always faithful to the Commander in Chief. Or always faithful to the government \u2013 of the people, by the people, and for the people. Or always faithful to one another \u2013 as brothers fighting shoulder to shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Probably all of the above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gCiLBz1taJ0?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>At the most basic level, I would hope that Marines \u2013 and any other person serving their country \u2013 would be faithful to their office.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>-What is your office?<br>-I am a United States Marine, sir.<br>-Then be true to that office.
