Are
Your Children Getting A Balanced Spiritual Diet?
The Ultimate Goal: A Healthy Disciple
Jesus’ command to us in Matthew 28:19 is clear: "Go and make
disciples of all nations... teaching them to obey everything I have
commanded you" (NIV). A healthy disciple of Christ is a
spirit-filled believer who reflects the character and goals of the Lord.
Disciples of every age should be growing more like Christ in their
everyday lives at home, at school, and at work.
Our goal at Curwensville Alliance Church is to build disciples and
equip them to go and make disciples also... and children are no exception.
Even the youngest of children can understand the love of God and
experience the life-changing power of the Holy Spirit. Studies show that
80% of adult Christians accepted Christ as their Savior before they were
eighteen.
Children who have come to Christ need to learn more about God and His
ways, and discover how they can serve Him. Our Children’s Ministries
Team is committed to providing that nurturing in the faith.
A Balanced Spiritual Diet
To live a healthy lifestyle, a person needs a balanced diet. Likewise,
to become a healthy disciple of Jesus Christ, we need balanced spiritual
diets. Hebrews 5:13-14 says that "Anyone who lives on milk, being
still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.
But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained
themselves to distinguish good from evil" (NIV). Our
purpose, therefore, is to provide children’s ministries that contain a
wide range of nutrients necessary for growth to spiritual maturity.
The Four Food Groups
When we think of what a mature disciple looks like, we can identify
twelve distinct areas of necessary development in his life that fall into
four categories. We intentionally provide these twelve building blocks of
growth in our children’s programs and monitor their long-term
"menus" to ensure that children have opportunity to grow in each
of these areas. A chart of the four spiritual food groups might look like
this:

Getting Fed
Children’s ministries occur in a variety of times and ways during the
week, but they all work together to provide a balanced spiritual diet.
Children who are involved in these ministries from nursery to grade six
will be nurtured in all the twelve areas to become healthy followers of
Christ in their everyday lives.
You can make sure your children are getting a balanced spiritual diet
by getting them involved in the following ministries here at Curwensville
Alliance:
9:30-10:30 am Sunday– Sunday School (Nursery-Grade 6 )
10:45-11:45 am Sunday– Children’s Worship (Ages 3-7; children
participate in corporate worship, then dismiss to their own worship
time)
7:00-8:00 pm Wednesday– Bible Clubs (Preschool-Grade 6)
Plus a variety of children’s activities, projects, and special events
throughout the year!
Nutrients for Growth
- Salvation– Knowing who Christ is, understanding my need for
salvation, and accepting Christ as my Savior.
- Bible Knowledge– Learning Bible truths and applying them to
everyday life, understanding Bible chronology, history, and the basic
doctrines of our faith.
- Relationship Building– Cultivating healthy relationships with
Christian peers, with the church family as a whole, and with mentoring
adults.
- Scripture Memorization– Systematic memorization of God’s Word,
hiding key verses in my heart for witnessing and Christian living.
- Prayer/Devotional Life– Developing a personal friendship with God
and having a vital and meaningful prayer life.
- Spirit Fullness– Understanding that Christians cannot grow and
follow Christ on their own, understanding the ministry of the Holy
Spirit and recognizing the need to daily depend on Him for holy
living.
- Worship– Participating in genuine heartfelt worship that glorifies
God.
- Gifts/Talents/Skills– Giving my natural talents and skills to God
for His glory, discovering and using my spiritual gifts.
- Outreach– Having a burden for those who do not know Christ and
using my resources to reach them.
- Stewardship– Realizing that everything I have comes from God and
using everything I have to care for others the way Jesus would.
- Service– Serving Christ and others actively in the church and in
the community.
- Missions Involvement– Supporting missions in prayer, giving, and
personal encouragement to missionaries, learning about worldwide
ministries to reach those who need the Gospel.
